Happy first day of classes from the Eskenazi School! The fall semester at Indiana University Bloomington officially begins today, but some students got a headstart in one of four Intensive First-Year Seminar courses taught this month by Eskenazi faculty. Whether in Deb Christiansen's "Fashioning Identity: Art + Artifacts +Fashion Theory," Carissa Carman's "Exploring 'Otherness' ArtX," Mary Embry's "Fashion Consumption in a Climate Emergency," or Spencer Steenblik's "AI and Making," IU students spent two and a half weeks getting their critical thinking cap on, acclimating to campus in a focused environment, and showcasing their projects in a program-wide Academic Forum in Alumni Hall. Speaker unveiled: Yetunde Aladeitan, PhD, FNSE, FNSChE is an ardent academic faculty, and she is bringing to us the untold stories from the classroom. There is a silently loud stereotype that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are boring, predictable, and uneventful in nature. This stereotype couldn’t be further from the truth. These topics can be fun, but how will we teach them to embrace this fun? What stereotypes are challenging the subject of STEM to be as fun as it should be? Is it how we teach, what we say or how we project this discipline? Join us here https://lnkd.in/eKEV2jJD#STEMeducation #stemleadership

I urge the younger generation to look at the world of literature with a broader outlook. Even if one is pursuing the sciences, one should not have the mindset of not looking at literature. Even parents should relook at the different choices offered by a new education system in India, and appreciate the interdisciplinary approach between Science and Liberal Arts. Our collective endeavour should be to help children become global citizens who do not have a tunnel vision but wear lenses that help them see the entire world. But where’s the ‘A’??The 21st Century academic curriculum ‘STEM’ is continuously, as it should be, in full force (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS).And to this, I offer Thunderous applause!!However, too, let us never 4get the equally vital, magnetic; overwhelmingly glad, soulful; creatively explosive; electrifying; and inexplicably intertwined philosophical dynamics, which the ‘A’ for ARTS, bring to one’s soul, sprit, and mind. As per the Sciences, the ARTS are vital to every human being's survival, mental balance, and ability to LIVE life, rather than simply exist inside life.It is both absurd and obstreperous, to exclude the letter 'A' representing the Arts, (which, unfortunately, is often), while describing thisperfectly dynamic, & highly effective, academic national curriculum.STEAM: Science -Technology - Engineering - ARTS - Mathematics. Every single university that has achieved excellence globally has done so by emphasizing post graduate education and research. MIT, Stanford, Caltech, Princeton, Purdue, Cornell, Oxford, Cambridge ... you name it.And we have decided to stay in eternal obeisance to undergraduate students. We are biting ourselves on our own arses. If any university provides undergraduate education, it has to do it well. This goes without saying. But if we are on a "oh we are so good..." trip merely because we can teach undergraduate classes, we, I repeat again for emphasis, are biting ourselves on our own arses. We are being immature, foolish, and I believe, intellectually lazy. Plus the excessive importance we give our undergraduate students results in way too many of them thinking they are "somebody" without having proven themselves in the real world first.PS: Just to be clear: By research I DO NOT mean chasing quantitative metrics. That's the other extreme of nonsense. There is a clear middle path that aspires for excellence in both teaching and research. That's the only academically sensible path that has ever existed, and ever will.

"Specifically, the curriculum should offer children a chance to learn about historic Western and non-Western contributions to the sciences, as well as cutting-edge contemporary research from diverse teams of scientists. Teachers should be encouraged to frame the successes of western science in the context of the times in which discoveries were made; at that time, some groups, cultures and nations were disadvantaged in their ability to participate in or to resource research and less able to claim credit and ownership for ideas that had been developed by them."Read the PCAG's (RSB, RSC, IOP, ASE) primary science recommendations (which does mention ice-lollies, thank you The Guardian) which also has what-not-to-include. Puddles, squirty cream, digging in the garden, kneading bread-dough and all those brilliant science learning experiences! And if anyone can put me in touch with the author who contributed the quoted text, please let me know so I can thank them personally!https://lnkd.in/eiXC6YaB#STEM #seeittobeit #STEMforall OCR Royal Society of Chemistry Royal Society of Biology Institute of Physics The Association for Science EducationFollow me on Bluesky too @amybrewer.bsky.social
